Welcome Baby Boy

I had mentioned that The Wife Was Pregnant well as you can tell from the title of the post, my tweets and my lack of online activity in the past couple days we had our baby!  Before anyone asks in the comments, Yes, I refer to her as The Wife in real life and Yes she knows about it (If you were curious before The Wife she was The Fiancé and before that she was The Girlfriend).

The adventure began on Tuesday November 30th at 11:30pm when The Wife called down to me to come upstairs.  As I reached the top of my step as she informed me, “My Water Broke.”  Woah, those were literally the 3 scariest words I had ever heard in my life.  I went into crises mode, got all the bags and went from tired to WIDE awake.  After getting dressed, including socks and shoes, The Wife informed me that we had to hang out for a bit and that I should try to get some sleep.  Sure, I’ll sleep! You just told me my entire life is going to change, you let go of a ridiculous amount of liquid AND at anytime things could get really serious really quickly.  Well I did fall asleep lol.

We get to the hospital at 430am, and since we thought we had to be half way there I called our parents and told them to be excited but DO NOT come to the hospital until I told them we knew how long we were looking at.  So Yeah, we weren’t half way there she was only 1cm dilated (I learned at that moment we had to get 10cms).  You could almost see the look of disappointment in The Wife’s face, but that look was replaced quickly.  The next 2 hours were horrible to watch, it was too early to take the epidural but she was having painful contractions and didn’t want to take any meds that may cross the barrier between her blood and the baby.  She held out and eventually got her epidural and that is the moment I became her friend again.

Eventually (read: about 9 hours since we got there) we were told it was ‘time.’  Time meant The Wife had to start pushing.  From decades of television I figured this meant tons of people would come into the room and I could fade into the background only to be called when things were calm, but no that’s not how it works.  The only people that were in the room from now until baby was The Wife, one nurse, our doctor and me.  I knew I couldn’t look at the whole thing so to be supportive I kept my eyes on the back wall, and yelled supportive things much like I would a weight lifting partner, “Push it”…”You got this”…”You are doing it”….”one more”…

I will spare the gory final details but on December 1 at approximately 3:30pm after 17 hours of labor The Wife gave birth to a healthy baby boy that I will refer to as The Baby.

And it only took a couple days to get him in a Falcon Onesie watching the game with pops!

  1. Congrats! That must have been amazing. My wife and I will go through that someday, but for now, we’re still deciding if we want a puppy…. 🙂

Good luck with the new addition!

  2. Congrats!! We had our son in December and I remember how amazing it was having the first Christmas with our new tiny baby. Enjoy it!

    (and get some sleep!)

    • I was hoping for December 25th (WAY after The Wife’s Due Date) but she told me I was being an idiot lol

      • Be glad the baby wasn’t born Dec. 25 … my boyfriend was born on Christmas Eve, and he’s always resented it a little. He says his birthday gets steamrolled over in favor of “presents for everyone!!”

  3. It’s always nice to add a little personal finance blogger to the group. I’m not sure about his choice of football teams though. I hear there are these two great teams in NY. They call them the Jets and the Giants. You should look into that for him.

    • The baby has two uncles that like those teams and his pops was too much of a pain in the ass when he was younger so he couldn’t join the norm!

    • We had a private birth coach who is a labor and delivery nurse at the hospital The Wife gave birth at (it worked out really well if anyone is in the New York Area).

BY THE SECOND HOUR I WANT TO SHIVER IN THE CORNER AND CRY!

        • I liken childbirth to the end of Apocolypse Now where you hear Colornal Kurtz (Marlon Brando) whispering “the horrors.”

Not that it’s bad but I don’t think anything short of medical school can really prepare a guy for what happens in childbirth, especially when you are extremely sleep deprived!

          • Our Coach gave us that video to watch and The Wife and I decided that it wouldn’t do us any good to know of “the horrors” that were coming lol

      • Just think, they used to do it (I guess plenty of people still do) without the nice Doctor and Nurse around to keep things under control…

        • I was actually shocked how few people were in the room…one doc, one nurse? Years of TV led me to believe it would have been a team of people looking literally INTO the wife lol

    • 6 months! Congrats. Does yoru involvement go up? Right now all the baby does is poop, sleep and eat and I can’t help in 2 of those categories lol

      • It definitely goes up…and sooner or later you may be helping in 2 or 3 of those categories :).

The part I enjoy the most is when they start smiling and recognize you. I think that was around 2 or 3 months for us.

  4. OMG Congratulations! What a blessing 🙂 This story was hilarious and heart warming at the same time. It’s only a matter of time until The Baby starts blogging too

  5. Congratulations!

Less time for money now! Actually, I didn’t really do that much with my son until he was 6 months old, that’s when it really start to get fun 🙂

    • I hold him and watch him while The Wife naps, but I can’t really do that much. He poops, eats and sleeps – I am unable to help in 2 of those daily activities and the 3rd I really prefer to be an assistant

  6. Hey, congrats!! Hope all the family is doing well. I particularly loved the “Well, I did fall asleep”. Hahaha!

    • Just beginning? You mean he doesn’t go out and get a job once he controls the bowel movements? lol

      Thanks for the well wishes!

    • Despite how awesome I think I look, some people don’t agree so I figured I would save them the trouble of looking at me HA

  7. Congrats, brings back memories from June when my wife had our son. It was a LONG day at the hospital, followed by a brief period of intense activity. I’m happy it all went so well!

  8. Congrats, Evan. I am very happy for you, the wife and the baby. Your life is now radically different forever, but that is a good thing!

    • It went really well. He gained back some of his weight (not all of it) they measured his head, and length and all were good.

My Younger Brother is deaf but no sign of that and I have this weird heart thing that I grew out of but no sign of that either!

      • Yippee! Very good news then! A healthy baby and a very proud dad! The weight thing is just normal. Almost all babies go through that. He’ll gain it back soon enough, you’ll see!

  9. Congrats Evan! Our son was born in December. After many hours of labor we had to have a c-section, talk about being scared, tired and going crazy all balled up together. Our daughter was a much more simple and fast delivery. Got to the hospital and she was born about two hours later. Enjoy parenthood as it goes by so fast.

    • Thanks! The C-Section rate at the hospital we were at was pretty high so we were excited it didn’t have to go that route.

  10. Welcome to The Baby and congrats to you and The Wife! It’s amazing how the birth of your child transforms you. I had a two-day labor with my first, epidural didn’t take on one side, pushed for several hours, and the second I held him for the first time I thought, “I would do this again in a heartbeat for this moment.”

If you haven’t already, consider checking the DVD of “Happiest Baby on the Block” from the library. (There’s a book, but you won’t have a lot of reading time with a newborn.) With my two completely opposite infants, the tricks worked to sooth them and get them to sleep. Good luck!

    • Happiest Baby on the Block? Is that anything like that horrible movie they tried to get me to watch with nasty woman giving birth…yeah I put the veto on that QUICKLY.

      • No, no birth scenes! It’s basically methods for soothing a baby – 5 S’s – like how to get a good swaddle.

My two babies were seriously opposites about everything from birth (different sleep patterns, one hated nursing and the other loved it, one wanted to snuggle all the time and one didn’t care to be held more than necessary, etc.) The methods in worked to soothe both of them.

        🙂

  11. Woah… Congrats, man! Seems like a pretty adventurous night… congrats on the new bundle of joy!

P.S. Why the white boxes? We already know what you look like. 😛

  12. Truly happy for you, congrats!

Sounds a little like when my son was born. It was late and my wife thought she was starting to go into labor. I told her to wake me when she knew (in case I still had to go to work). A couple of hours later she shakes me and says it’s time to go. Man, did that little extra sleep come in handy!

Best of luck and health! You probably hear this everywhere but enjoy every minute of it. It truly does go by fast.

  13. Congrats Evan! I am glad everything went fine. Don’t let all the baby related tasks scare you, it’s worth it.

  14. Congratulations to you and The Wife! He’s adorable and love how you already got him watching the game.

Did you already tell us how a NY guy is a Falcons fan?

    • No one ever asked! I became a falcons fan because I loved Deon Sanders’ cocky attitude! and I just stuck with the team through some dark times.

    • You are in ATL?! Awesome I have been to the coke museum but never to a falcon game. The Wife and I are planning on going for my 30th bday next year.

  15. Congratulations! You are right about your life changing for ever!!! It will definitely never be the same and you will love every minute of it. 🙂

  16. Congratulations to your new bundle of joy!

Surely this is the best gift you received this year, and it’s not even Christmas yet. Have fun, daddy-yo!
    😀

  17. Congratulations! That’s wonderful news to hear! I hope The Wife and The Baby are both continuing to do well, and that you aren’t going too crazy with a new member of the household!

  18. Reading all the comments just brings back so many great memories… I have had 3 children so far and enjoying every minute of it! 😉
