The Wall Street Journal had an article about different ETF Funds suing each other because their names are similar and may be confusing to some investors, and it got me to thinking what funny stock market symbols are out there?
I always liked BUD for Budweiser’s parent company, Anheuser Busch but they were sold to inBev.
WSJ highlights some funny ETFs,
- BIL (Treasury bills),
- MUNI (municipal bonds),
- CORN (grain),
- KOL (fossil fuel),
- GAZ and OIL (energy),
- WOOD and CUT (forestry stocks),
- GRID (utilities),
- JO (coffee),
- HEDJ (a currency-hedged stock fund) or
- FAN and TAN (wind-energy and solar stocks)
Funny Stock Symbols
I had to go searching for funny stock symbols
- YUM for parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut, etc.
- BID for Sotheby’s
- MOO is an Agricultural Fund (Thanks Darwin’s Finance – an ETF)
- DNA for Genetech, a Biotech Firm…recently bought out (Thanks Joe Taxpayer)
- EAT for the parent company of Chilis and On the Border
- LUV for SouthWest Airlines
- GRR for an Asian Tigers Fund
Which Ones am I missing? While you’re at it, you might also want to check out these simple debt payment solutions.
HOG – Harley Davidson
BUNZ – owns Schlotsky’s Deli (I think)
HOG is a great one! I couldn’t find bunz
BUNZ used to be Schotzsky’s, but it was pulled off NASDAQ as part of the Chapter 11 re-org back in ’04.
This is a cool idea for a post! Nicely done! One I read about recently is the symbol, EU, for the WisdomTree Dreyfus Euro Fund Currency ETF.
There is also EUO for the Euro UltraShort
Don’t forget good old GM aka Government Motors!
UGLYX – Leuthold Undervalued and Unloved ETF
Why not just UGLY? Either way it might be one of my favorites
I think all mutual funds have to have “X” at the end. (I believe I erred calling it an ETF.)
Evan, this is a cool post idea…wish I had thought of it!
Here’s one I stumbled on…
BOOM – Dynamic Materials Corp, they’re in Explosive Metalworking
I don’t have many cool post ideas so I was due! lol
Papa John’s is PZZA, but these other ones are even better:
MolsonCoors: TAP
Avis: CAR
Transocean, makers of drilling rigs: RIG
Gibraltar Industries: ROCK
Insulet, whose flagship product is the OmniPod insulin distributor: POD
ML Macadamia Orchards: NUT
Advanced Medical Optics: EYE
HearUSA, which sells hearing aid batteries: EAR
Comfort Systems USA (heating, ventilation, air conditioning repair): FIX
Nicor, formerly Northern Illinois Gas: GAS
Claymore/Beacon Global Timber Index: CUT
Claymore/Delta Global Shipping: SEA
Vanguard Dividend Appreciation Exchange-Traded Fund: VIG
And my favorite, ProShares Short Dow 30: DOG
WOAH! I Wish I talked to you before I created the post. Did you know about these before the post? or do I inspire you to find them?
I didn’t know the origin behind POD, but I knew the rest. It’s funny how I look at ticker symbols every day, and I still can’t remember the vast majority of them.
HOG and DNA are my personal favorites. Nice article.
You got a bunch of cool ones. I like CAT (Caterpillar), too.
I just hope people don’t invest only based on cool names (like they do betting on horses)!
Fun post.
WFR is a good one its for MEMC materials and they make silicon waffers
wotif, ASX = WTF . Thats my fav
Nice list. How about POT or IRS?
How about NAME?
Great addition Bob!
