What is Your Day Job or Profession?

Whenever I get a comment I always wonder what makes up that person.  I will admit that I literally click on every link and check every site that is embeded in my comments.  One one hand I am curious, and would be happy to discover a new site to read, on the other I want to make sure that they didn’t link to garbage.

That Curiousity then leads me to wonder, what do YOU during the day?  So I am not sure the response I’ll get but this blogger wants to know about you instead of just putting my annoying awesome opinion out there once again.

So People Tell me what you Do during those hours when you aren’t sleeping or doing what you REALLY want to do?!

  1. Hey Evan.

I’m a business consultant that works with investment banks and hedge funds. Considering that the June CFA exams are around the corner, I’ve been spending a lot of time studying too.

How do you like financial planning?

    • Sweet a Consultant…Now I can finally ask you. What the Hell does a consultant do? I have a few buddies and they can’t really explain it to me.

Do you walk into a hedge fund or investment bank and literally tell them what they are doing wrong/ineffiecient?

  2. I’m a business coach mostly. I do a lot of different things though, personal coaching, working with EepyBird.com (a viral video company), and am working on creating an iPhone App company.

I find it boring to only do one thing, so I dip my hand into a bunch of different things I like to do. 🙂

    • Yes! At least I understand your job (Not like the other 2 “Chandler Bings” reference, anyone?).

I would love to have a couple different projects going on. I sort of do now – day job, law practice, and this blog. But your’s seem much more exciting and real.

Wow Your blog is blocked at my office as malware, you may want to contact FortiGuard.

  3. Wow thanks for telling me! I had never heard of FortiGuard before. (And I’m an IT geek) so thanks again!

It’s a bit hard to do so many projects considering I only work 25 hours a week (well disregarding when I want to stay up til midnight working!) But it’s always fun.

  4. I am a Management Reporting Associate for a large Investment Bank. I always liked the personal finance side better and read similar blogs.

    • Einat,

A amangement Reporting Associate? What the hell is that? 2 Comments and I dont’ really understand what either does during their day…hmmm pretty sure its me!

I LOVE YOUR SITE. Since your site in a NYC Eating Site, I have to recommend Shabu Tatsu on 10th between 1st and 2nd (I think). AMAZING FOOD..hands down my fav restaurant in the city.

  5. I work as an analyst for a major utility company. I’m on a contract, so I’m not an actual employee. It’s a bit difficult to describe what I do here, but a lot of what I do is analyze and process invoices for payment.

I did complete the coursework to become a CFP, but have decided at this point to not sit for the exam. I’m not exactly sure I want to commit to a career switch yet.

  6. Hey Evan, I’m new to Yakezie, so hello!

By day I’m an entrepreneur/software development director/consumer advocate…by night pretty much the same plus a little family time mixed in.

    • That’s really cool what kind of software do you develop? Consumer side stuff? Business to business? What do people program in these days? Something tells me it isn’t C++ or VB (yup I played with a little VB when I was 13 lol)

Welcome to Yakezie if you need help let me know

      • We’re really across the board in a bunch of industries, but mostly B2B. A little C++ and VB, and a lot of Java and Open Source stuff. I steer away from the actual coding myself and act more as a translator between the techies and our clients. You might even want to tag me as a “consultant” too!

Thanks for the offer, I’m down from 2.5million in alexa to about 888k in a couple weeks! But could always use any love you wanna send my way :). I grabbed your RSS so I’ll be around.

  7. I’m a CPA, but you already knew that 🙂 I work at a small firm in the St. Louis area and do everything from personal income taxes to financial statements for small companies to estate/trust work.

      • I’m still reading, so far so good I guess. I’ll let you know if I see anything amiss 🙂

Actually the first post I read here was something on estate tax (I think it was a guest post).

  8. Semi-retired at 44 y.o. (please don’t hate me!) 🙂

Working one or two days a week for a couple of more months doing corporate tax, then off for the rest of the year.
For fun? A lot of RVing, X-C and downhill skiing in the winter, hiking and biking in the summer, agility with my dog, reading, investing, renovating my house and long lunches with friends. In other words, my ideal life.

    • Semi-retired at 44? Why would I hate you?! As long as you are happy that is bad ass.

I will say hate and corporate tax in the same sentence though

What is agility with your dog?

  9. I work full time online. A mix between doing web and graphic design for clients (my original career) and running my own blogs that make money through various means.

My frugal blog is the one I have passion for so I work on that the most.

Luckily my work allows me to not be geographically constrained so I live in Egypt right now….. who knows where next?

    • I couldn’t imagine working fully online too many distractions!

It is easy to tell that you have some skills in the design category your site looks great

      • Thanks Evan… I am always very unhappy with my own sites so always tweaking and changing but never get to spend enough time on their designs!

It can be distracting but i want to do it and enjoy it so it’s easier to be motivated than going to a real office job!

  10. I’m a district manager for a very large retail building materials company. We have 140 locations in 16 states. I’m responsible for 23 of them in 5 states.

I travel too much, eat too much fast food, live in hotels 150 nights per year, and look forward to my next promotion (which should bring me in from the road).

    • 140 Locations?! How many of those are you in control of?

Traveling like that for work is tough. How do you know your promotion is around the corner?

      • 23. I know that someone is retiring in November and I’ve already been lobbying for his slot. My former boss, current boss, and HR manager all agree that I should get it.

  11. E-dog – A consultant does whatever the client wants them to do. BTW, is there a better plugin which will allow me to reply to the original comment instead of starting a new comment?

Consultants can come in the form of: strategy consultants or IT consultants usually. Client to consultant “Please assess the latest competitive landscape in region X, and provide several suggestions as how we should proceed.” Client to consultant “please implement a new CRM software for all our sales people.”

As for me, during the day, I am the CEO of Financial Samurai. During the night, I am the writer and editor of Financial Samurai.

    Best,

    Sam

    • With an empire like financial Samurai it will eventually become a full time job!

Not sure what you mean about the comment plugin – throw me an email or DM

  12. By night, I’m an ER technician. Basically, I do whatever the doctor(s) and up to five RNs tell me to do. I’m starting to see the light though, and a return for my RN degree is in the plans.

By day, I help my father with his funeral establishment. Basically, I’m an administrative assistant. And I pick up the occasional dead person.

Somewhere in between, I blog at FeFi. Yeah, I do a lot of things.

    • Have a buddy who is in the midst of his RN degree, and my mom is a home care nurse. It is some tough schooling, but when you are done you can talk shit about the doctors above because all nurses LOVE talking shit about doctors lol

  13. I work in IT configuring Cisco equipment and building servers. Fun stuff, though whenever I get a chance, I work on my finances! I can’t tell you how many discussions I’ve had with people at work about Saving/Investing!

      • Yeah we are all pretty laid back. And a surprisingly large amount of people I work with are not investing in their future/their 401k. So far I’ve gotten 2 people to start:)

  14. i wont even list my job. its one of those jobs that society looks down on. I’ll just say blue collar work.

  15. Late replying here, but my day job involves technical writing and taking care of web sites. Cool idea to find this stuff out — now I must go read the other comments.

  16. Wow, I’m late to the game, but I’m an catchall IT guy, with my primary focus being our SQL Servers.

I also catchall to some extent: web server, VOIP, monitoring software, etc…

Not the most glamorous work, but it pays the bills…

    • Cranky…Attorney? Hmmmm NEVER!

Immigration and bankruptcy? Two emotionally taxing areas of the law, why not just pick up some divorce while you are at it lol

      • Used to do Divorce also.

I have 4 kids. As each one came along I added another specialty. As each one started supporting themselves I dropped a specialty.

I still have two kids in college hence I still have two specialties.

I know it’s a bizarre approach to practice management but it’s worked for me.

  17. I started a company that makes handmade jam and sells it at local farmers’ markets and online in Colorado. Currently, I am working on an MBA and work full time as a nurse at a local hospital. Great Blog!

  18. When you first wrote this, I was unemployed (which happens to the best of us, I suppose); now, I’m a proud graduate student. Not the most awe inspiring of jobs, true, but hey, I get paid to study (and teach undergraduates), so no complaints there.

  19. I am a registered Nurse, I have two jobs in hospitals am in school for my BSN, and my goal 0 debt….love your blog !!! Gayle, RN
