Sometimes a blogger has to rant about something! It could be financial in nature, familial in nature, political in nature, but they often get emotional

My Thoughts on Amazon Coming to Long Island City

It was recently announced that Amazon's highly anticipated HQ2 was to be split between Virginia and Long Island City (an area right outside of NYC) and I have had mixed emotions on the subject. What is New York PAYING to get One-Half of Amazon's Second Headquarters? I am going to take the cliff notes from CNN since the actual NYC-Amazon offer is 32 pages, The incentives offered for Amazon's Long Island City campus total $1.5 billion if the company hires 25,000 people, and up to $1.7 billion if it hires 40,000 people, which mostly reflects a $48,000-per-job tax credit for every position [...]

I Hate Being a Homeowner

No one really talks about it, but I hate being a homeowner.  Nope, I hate it.  I hate it so much that I used a color font for probably the second time in the 8 years of running this site.  Since purchasing my home I have had to: Do masonry work on my fireplace since starting a fire made my house reek of smoke Convert from oil to gas after calculating the exact amount I'd save converting from oil to gas heat Replace boards in my deck from rotting Redo my whole upstairs insulation When the foundation allowed seepage during a ridiculously heavy [...]

Why Does it Seem Like No One is Worried about Growing Public Pension Gaps?

CNBC had an article the other day highlighting the disturbing public pension gap that is growing at an alarming rate.  While I didn't read the study by Moody's behind the article the statistics highlighted by CNBC are, to say the least, frightening: In less than a decade, that shortfall has tripled to at least $2 trillion—more than half of all outstanding state and local bond debt, according to a report by Moody's Investors Service. Moody's looked at the unfunded liabilities of the 25 biggest public retirement systems, which cover 40 percent of the $5.3 trillion in total U.S. public pension plan assets. Like nearly [...]

Can’t It Just be FireMAN…Not Fire Person?

Short and Angry rant today. The Wife posted a picture of the boy in a Fireman's Hat with the following status: Most comments were the standard "Your son is so cute" and "his father must be a great looking guy" but one really annoyed me.  It is the kind of political correct bullshit that ends with kids not being able to play with a ball during recess. This particular person is such a nice and warm person, but very liberal and I knew that was a direct dig at the word firemen.  You know what? It is just fireman. Women in Firefighting [...]

I Am Not Convinced That the American Dream Isn’t a Nightmare

Lets say I offered you an investment that: Is highly illiquid If you do sell there are tremendous surrender charge like fees At any time I can ask you to put more money into it that may or may not raise your principal investment, but if you don't put that money your principal investment will go down QUICKLY On going interest charges for 30 or so years You will be taxed on the value of the investment every year Will literally never throw off income Every month/year you will have to give me more money and if you don't you almost everything [...]
