A Nasty Drop in the Market Should NOT Cause Panic

The market is not yet opened on Monday August 24, 2015 and it is already looking nasty out there.  As of writing this sentence it looks like the Dow is going to open somewhere between 600 and 700 points lower than it did Friday...oh, how I long for Friday which closed the Dow 500 points lower from Thursday...never mind I am dreaming of Thursday which only had a 200 point drop.  Again, as of writing this post the market is down 8% or so year to date. Remind Yourself of Certain Things during an Investment Downturn Giving back months (and for some [...]

Turning Back on my Dividend Reinvestments

Earlier this year, I declared that I was finished with automatic dividend reinvestments, but I am here to admit, for me, that was a mistake. My very logical thought process was that if I wouldn't deploy new capital into stocks that do not pass my screen for undervalued dividend investments why let paid dividends buy "overvalued" shares regardless of how small the amount.  When making the decision in March I stated the one very foreseeable risk would be, to remember that the reinvestment of dividends is not part of my monthly contributions to the account.  If I am putting away $500 a [...]

August 2015 Value Dividend Growth Portfolio Update

Almost every month for the past few years I would create a watch list of dividend growth stocks that could be considered undervalued, however, I am taking this month off! I created my last watch list only 12 days ago so the information is relatively current, and considering the blood bath that this week has been for stocks it is time to buy my monthly lot (remember buy low!). Dividend Investment Portfolio Activity in July 2015 I didn't sell any positions in July, but on 7/31/2015 I purchased 8 shares of XOM at a cost basis of $79.29.  In my June 2015 [...]

Presidential Republican Candidates Need to Stay Away from “Social Issues”

Politically, I identify mostly with the idea of libertarianism.  The definition of which defers person to person (much like "right" and "left") but the the tiny political party claiming to represent the ideology, provides a pretty good baseline definition, Libertarians believe in, and pursue, personal freedom while maintaining personal responsibility. *** Libertarians strongly oppose any government interfering in their personal, family and business decisions.  Essentially, we believe all Americans should be free to live their lives and pursue their interests as they see fit as long as they do no harm to another. In a nutshell, we are advocates for a smaller [...]

August 2015 Net Worth Update

Starting in April I decided I was going to proactively do at least one thing to better my personal finance situation at the most basic of levels.  This provides me the opportunity to get back to the roots regarding my personal finance situation.  It is easy to take your eye off the ball after running a PF blog for 8 years! I don't think I did anything proactive in July.  I will have to change that in August! At the beginning of each month I calculate the increase or decrease in my net worth month over month and year to date.  I [...]
