To pick up a tangent, I’m one of those strange people who thinks that unmarried couples – whether straight or not – should not have the same rights as married couples.

Not because I believe that married people should be rewarded or similar for being married, but because I believe that there should be a spectrum of choice.

i.e. I should be able to cohabit with someone without us both being financial liable in various ways for the other.

If we want more commitment/liability, then we should marry. If not, we should be left alone.

Great Article. Same-sex couples have similar problems to those of un-married heterosexual couples. When dealing with married couples, the laws regarding insurance, estate planning, and taxes are clear. Also, in the event that a couple decides to break up, the divorce courts and divorce laws provide both a forum and rules for ending the relationship, dividing the property, and deciding child custody. With same sex couples and unmarried heterosexual couples, I have had to do three lawsuits (at triple the cost) to handle what I could have done in a divorce case.

I’m with you Evan, legalizing gay marriage just seems like the right thing to do.

Bigger problems are things that pass by virtue of marriage – like Social Security survivor benefits, pensions that only pay to the spouse after the employee dies, etc. Not to mention when we talk about estate planning and the unlimited marital deduction.
