Caring Less about the Financial Stupidity of Others

Not sure what has happened over the past couple of years but I find myself caring less and leas about the stupidity of others with regards to piss poor financial decisions.  I am not sure if it is maturity, immaturity, age, zen focus, lack of focus, selfishness, becoming jaded, etc., but I stepped back the other day and realized that I don’t get as heated any more when I read about someone doing something dumb with money.  This is true both in my personal life as well as in the online world.

I Still Love Talking About Finances With Most People

I am not a financial planner, but I love discussing personal finance topics with anyone that wants to talk about it.  Whether it is running calculations for friends, running this blog, my investment club, etc. I love doing it all (well the investment club is trying at certain times)!

I have just found myself commenting less and less when I read a blog post about someone who is so dumb it would make the Evan of 4 years ago irate.  Similarly, I don’t push friends and/or family anymore on topic of spending, investing, etc., unless they engage first.

I have come up with two possible explanations that are not mutually exclusive:

  • I have accepted the fact that a lot of people just don’t care about their future finances; and
  • I know I am doing the right thing by my family

  1. That’s a lot of ads in one post!

Yeah, some people just are going to change, and you can’t save everyone. I just try to live as an example to others and to offer honest feedback when it’s requested.

    • Fixed the Ads – I had a setting wrong. Thanks!

Years ago I felt the need to tell people they were being an idiot – that has faded. Did you ever feel the need/desire? or was it always by request in your world?

  2. Sometimes it’s tough to read about the decisions others make but I learn from them. I learn I don’t want to make them nor will I ever. Like the other comment you can’t save everyone but what you can do is share your wisdom and what works for you. I often say the one’s you are helping never let you know but I’m sure there are people that are thankful. Mr.CBB

  3. I’m with ya on this one.

Did you read Rick Ferri blog post for today by any chance? You will get a laugh. I think that may explain it for you.

      • Yes that’s the one. Ricks blog is really good. He has really good advice. Short and sweet usually.

Then of course Saturday my Neighbour complained to me that his IG funds have been losing money for the last 5 years (since I last told him to review his investments and if he wanted I could offer alternative suggestions…) He had a swig of beer and grumbled something about crooks and the system was rigged and walked off.

I try to help people whenever I can. I’m stuck in high fee poor performing funds at my work. (But after years of fighting it, they finally may make a change) Ever since I figured out how badly they have been sticking it to my colleagues and myself at work with fees (with zero in the way of planning offered) it woke me up to try to warn as many people as I can. Some have listened though. But like my Neighbour some just don’t ever seem to take an hour and think about one of the most important financial decisions of their lives. So I totally understand where you are coming from here.

Keep up your great work! It’s much appreciated.

  4. It can be frustrating when people/friends say the really want to get organized, start a budget, save money, and they just can’t get the first steps going, no matter how many times you have the conversation. I guess all you can do is keep your focus on your own goals. I can’t say it doesn’t still bug me though!

  5. Hah yes, I used to feel compelled to help / advise anyone who needed it, not just those who wanted it. Now, if they’re just going to complain, and not even think about what might be a better way to handle things, I just silently shake my head and move on.

I am bewildered by the insistence on offering advice and assistance repeatedly to people who constantly rebuff it, though. They very very clearly don’t want your help, why keep beating a dead horse?
