Retirement accounts are PODs. With a legitimate beneficiary option they don't go through probate. Normally a trust will only be used a beneficiary if their is a specific, separate reason.

K,

I am not your attorney so I can't provide any legal advice - I will defer to your Legal Counsel.

Notwithstanding, your situation as presented is a bit confusing. If it is after your demise (death) whose medical expenses would you be paying?

Advice, please. I need to designate a second beneficiary on my IRA's and Roth's. I would like to designate our family trust as the second beneficiary as we have no children and would like money available to pay any medical expenses after my demise. I'm not worried about taxes at that point. Is this ok for my situation?

It is a GREAT option, but an advanced one so make sure you work with a very good attorney that is used to this kind of work

Thank you for this solid explanation. Many are confused about what happens with an IRA when they die. Of course, you don't to incentivize anyone to "off" you, so the solution that you present is very good. Thx!
