Dividend Growth Portfolio September 2017 Update

I am way too excited to write this post.  It has been 6 months or so since I wrote an update to my dividend growth account.  I took a self-imposed hiatus earlier this year to roll out of some positions wherein it seemed wrong to keep investing when the margin balance kept growing.  With last month being the first month I was back in the thick of it, updating and creating my screen for undervalued dividend growth stocks, I figured it was about time to restart tracking the income from this account as well as my monthly purchases.

My Month Income From my Dividend Growth Portfolio

The income from this account is made up of two parts that should be tracked.  The first is naturally the dividends earned from this account.  At one point in the history of this blog I have years of records, however, I am going to take this opportunity to start completely from scratch.  The second source of income that should be monitored is the cleared income from selling (and the subsequent buying) of naked puts.  As time goes on I’ll start to graph the income, but with one month under my belt, it seems silly to create a graph with nothing to compare.

Lastly, I think it is important to reduce the total of those two numbers with the margin interest I paid.  Hopefully, that number will be reduced over time to a nominal amount, but at the current time I am holding some stocks that were put to me driving that number up.

  • CFR – $5.85
  • ORI – $11.88
  • TROW – $20.56

I think over time it is likely I’ll change the way I share, but this is a great starting point.

My Dividend Purchase for September

After I put the dividend champions through my screen I ended up with the following holdings:

  • Community Trust Banc. CTBI
  • Cullen/Frost Bankers CFR
  • Genuine Parts Co. GPC
  • International Business Machines IBM
  • Southside Bancshares SBSI
  • Target Corp. TGT
  • Wal-Mart Stores Inc. WMT

On 9/5/2017 I purchased 12 additional shares of CTBI for $501.72 (with fees) for an average share price of $41.81.  I didn’t write down the metrics at the time of purchase and fortunately the stock is up 10% since I purchased it, so presenting current metrics doesn’t add much to the conversation.  I am well aware that 10% inside a month is absolutely just luck!  In the future I will keep write down the metrics and thought process at the time of purchase.

I think there is value in sharing the holdings in the future, however, I just have to figure out an easy way to share the information so there is value for both the reader and myself.  Anyone have any suggestions?
