A Second Stimulus Will Not Solve your Problems

If you read other personal finance blogs, you’ll see my name all over the comments so I always click the little box that says email if there is a new comment – well my email box, has never been more bombarded than when the topic of second stimulus check comes up.  Want a great example check out one of my favorite personal finance blogs, Blueprint for Financial Prosperity - THIS IS THE POST.  Here are some of the comments:

Yes, I am for the second-stimulus package. I am a family of 4 and my husband has been laid of from Sheet metal Union, because there is no work, and I have been cut to 32 hours a week at my job.

it is not our fault that the government screwed up. i will accept any finances that the government offers to give me – that’s called survival. i need to pay my rent and buy food.

the only one who can clean up this financial mess is Barack Obama because he truly cares and want to make things better for us. i hope the security guards are staying close to his side to protect him. i need him to show me a better world – people coming together – for a good cause -themselves.

I was wondering are we really getting another stimulus package and when Now that Nov. 4th is over time for congress to deside are we or aren’t we getting this check I’m a single mother and I could use this money to pay my bils and what ever is left over I will use wisely.

A SECOND STIMULAS CHECK WOULD BE GREAT! MY HUSBAND AND I BOTH WORK EVERY DAY AND STILL HAVE TO STRUGGLE TO MAKE ENDS MET. NOT EVERYONE IN THE US IS BLESSED WITH HAVING MONEY OR SOMEONE IN THEIR FAMILY PASSING AND LEAVING THEM WITH MONEY.

FOR THE PEOPLE THAT WORK EVERY DAY AND STILL HAVE TO STRUGGLE TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAMILIES AND NOT SITTING ON A NEST ESGG NEED HELP!!!

WORK EVERYDAY ANDI NEVER HAVE ANY MONEY LEFT OVER TO BY ME SOMETHING NICE IT’S EITHER BUY FOOD OR PAY YOUR UTILITIE BILL WHICH I THINK IS A BIG RIP OFF SO A STIMULUS CHECK HELPS ME A LOT AND I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE BE BAILED OUT INSTEAD OF BIG GREEDY BANKS BEING BAILED OUT WHO GOT THEM SELVES IN THIS SITUATION IN THE FIRST PLACE HELP THE ONES WHO WANTS TO HELP THEMSELVES PLEASE THANK YOU

The above quotes are NOT edited they are cut and pasted – Call me insensitive, many have, but I don’t get the heated argument of a second stimulus check…a one time check of a grand will not solve any of the above people’s problems. IT JUST WON’T.

I understand that there are tons of families out there who need money, who are living pay check to paycheck, but – What the Hell is a Grand in the hands of the common people going to do?  Nothing except feed into populism demands.

While I would NEVER turn down a check from the IRS, I just don’t see how thi is going to solve the country’s problems.  Don’t give me the basic Keynesian  argument (Don’t know what it is? Check HERE) that giving each family $1,000 will stimulate the economy.  It didn’t earlier this year, and it didn’t work in 2001.  What does work? Follow real Keynesian Economics – the government should be contracting for infrastructure and energy projects.

So you pay a few bills, you get a few gifts for family members, you go out to dinner a couple times, but happens when the calendar turns to February, and there is no check coming?

What will solve your problems? Create a budget (quasi-info here), Start a Snowball Debt (info here), Sell those assets that you can’t afford, and stop trying to justify your life (there are very few people who NEED a New Car, there are very few people who NEED a McMansion).

    Sigh.

You’re not being insensitive. While I know unemployment is up and incomes are down, we’ve gotten ourselves into this mess by overspending and undersaving. A second stimulus check will not solve this problem.

If you want to help yourself, great! Do it. Cashing a government check is not “helping yourself.”

My husband and I earn about half of what our friends do, yet we live more comfortably. While everyone else is going crazy about having no money for Christmas (did you see that the average spending dropped from $800 to $400 this year?), we’re doing what we always do – sticking to our budget and buying meaningful gifts for those closest to us.

If you need a stimulus check to pay for rent and food, something is very wrong. Spend less – it can be done. We need to stop spending more than we earn and then asking for handouts. That goes for families and corporations…

  2. Stacey,

I don’t understand what people are going to do when there is no stimulus check the next month? or next year?

  3. I’m not sure what people are thinking, that this stimulus will make things better. It breaks my heart to think of people struggling financially, but a one-time stimulus check is not the answer to our long-term problems. The government will NOT (or should not) send you a check each month for rent and food, some situations excluded.

If you haven’t recently lost your job, ect., what has changed that you suddenly need this check? We’re dealing with rising food costs in our household by cutting back, mainly by eating out less and planning our meals around sale items. If I can feed my hungry, hard-working husband and myself on $45 per week while food prices rise, other families can also find ways to cut back.

The point is, we all need to deal with our problems without expecting a bailout. If you’re stretched so thin that price increases are strangling your budget, something’s got to give and you need to re-evaluate your financial situation.

I’ve heard so many people say that a check now would help with Christmas. Glad to see that they understand the true meaning of the holidays – consumerism!

  4. I think that the stimulus package have helped a lot in restoring the economy. right now we can see some improvements in the economy. right now we can see some improvements in the eco::*
