6 Month Update on 2012 Goals and Objectives

Written before reading my 2012 Goals and Objectives: I hope I am wrong but I have a sinking suspicion that I have not lived up to what I must have written in that post.  If this is the case I rather than making excuses I am going to try and explain whether I am altering the goal or how I am going to change my plan of action to achieve the goal.

I started this blog to keep myself accountable to anyone that happened to be reading it and what better way than to call myself out!

I organized my goals into the following categories:

  • Personal Life
  • Professional Life
  • Blogging World
  • Online Income World
  • Financial Goals

Check up of Personal Goals

Spending time with Family and friends seems to be my main driver in life.  I go home for lunch at least 3 days a week and get to see my boy.  It makes me very happy and something I won’t always have.  I have kept this up and I am pretty happy so far this year.

Moving on to everything else bad…

While I have kept up with Krav Maga I have yet to lose any weight.  It could be a mixture of not taking it too seriously (1 to 2 times a week versus 3 to 4 times a week) as well as my diet which is not great.  While those two things are pretty up there I think my main downfall is the booze, but it also could be my lack of sleep which leads us to another failure of mine.

I still have absolutely no time management skills.

Fixing my Personal Short Falls

The lack of sleep/time management are very intertwined and have a lot to do with working at night on side projects not related to my daytime job (like this blog for example).  I don’t think cutting back is the answer, but rather focusing on one or two tasks a night.  If I don’t finish those tasks they get carried over.

Tonight, I am going to create an Evernote account and keep a copy not only on my home computer but my phone as well. This list is going to be my “to do” list for week night work.  (Side Note: just tried to set up an Evernote Account and it turns out I already had one! Re-setup my account).

In addition, starting tonight, I am going to enforce a strict 12am bed time those nights I am home.

Career

My Goal is/was to

…keep the bosses happy.  I haven’t had my year end review so I am not sure if that just means keep doing what I am doing and try to smile more lol.

I am giving thought to getting my CFP since I already have my Juris Doctorate (law degree) all it would mean is that I sit and take the test (after studying my butt off).

I never really ended up having a true end of year review, more of an informal “Everything is fantastic, Evan.” So I guess I am succeeding on the first part of the goal.

I never really gave much thought to the CFP exam after I wrote that post. If I decided to follow through with it I will have to start studying in the next month or so.  The problem is weighing the fact that it won’t really advance my career today with the fact it might not even advance my career later on in life.  I would be taking the test just for me, which feels great but limits my drive.

Law Offices of Evan

No goals so no failure!

Blogging World

Non Geek Stuff

    • Use some of the connections I have made to guest post somewhere larger than me once a month
    • Keep up with up submitting to blog carnivals
    • Keep interacting on Twitter (you should follow me I am fun to talk to).

I have actually kept up with all these goals although I have slowed down on the guest posts since the Summer started.  I will fix that next week by finishing up some posts people have already said yes to and contacting more people.

Geek Stuff

Reviewing each of my old posts for:

  • Grammatical mistakes which I make A LOT OF;
  • Better affiliate positioning; and
  • Better SEO

FAIL.

Fixing Geek Stuff

This is going to take a long time, but I will start from the beginning and just slowly make my way through 700+ Posts! This will be a new goal for 12/31/12.

Online Income World

My current viable Streams of include include

  • My Journey to Millions
  • An offshoot of this blog that I work with a partner on,
  • My job is number 3 (and way too big in comparison to the first two lol).

My goal is/was to create a 4 and 5 this year.

FAIL

I put a few bucks into what I thought would be a 4th stream of income (PregnancyPool) but that has not worked out at all.

I think for the rest of the year I am not going to worry about building 4 and 5 rather really focus on growing the first two streams.

Financial Goals

Housing

Success…sort of.  We put our house on the market in March, but have yet to sell. Oh we also haven’t found a house to live in either.  Maybe this is more of a fail lol.

Debt

See how well I know myself,

Last year’s debt project was paying off my car (succeeded).  This year will be to pay off my smaller law school loan.  I don’t see this as being too big of a project, since the car was at 8K+ in January of 2011 and the balance of this loan is only at ~$4,300, but I like having something to focus on while saving and investing.  If I am able to do it by July I can reevaluate half was through the year.

I killed off about $1,300 of this loan since January.  Since I am reevaluating I think I am just going to continue to pay 2 to 3 times the minimum payment instead of getting hyper-focused on the debt since I need to cash much more than I need the debt gone.

Net Worth

This may fall into my hated, just spout random numbers, but my goal based on everything above would be to increase my net worth 50%.

Year to date I am up a bit over 26% so I think this goal is really doable and would even be a breeze if the markets wouldn’t mind so much that sovereign nations are close to imploding lol.

  1. My year is going pretty well. I landed a new job which was my main goal and also started my blog which isn’t doing too shabby! Keep up the good work. You can’t always win but most of your goals seem to be going well.

  2. My goals were delayed thanks to my pinched nerve. I will start volunteering the last Sunday this month at a homeless shelter. It was not my first choice, but I am putting my toe in the water. I am starting to make progress on the other goals slowly.

    • It is fantastic you are bouncing back! I don’t remember hearing about the pinched nerve, what happened?

  3. Sometimes the best ideas for making a little extra money just fail completely. It happens… don’t worry about it too much. Good luck going through those posts. I don’t envy you.

    • Thanks Corey! I have tried to outsource it before but it just cost too much in comparison to the tangible changes. It might even be fun re-reading what I wrote years ago.

  4. My year is going great! I have already met all my financial goals for the year so I will be able to surpass them quite a bit since its only July. Some personal goals got the boot, like continuing my weight loss journey because we decided it continue to grow our family and are now expecting our 3rd child in early Jan. But other personal goals, like participating in a CSA and switching to hormone & antibiotic free beef has been accomplished.
